Pro track
Mechanism, biomarkers, and the literature. For coaches, clinicians, and obsessives who want the receipts.
What Carnivore Actually Is
The diagnostic value is asymmetric: a clean response doesn't prove a single mechanism (oxalate, lectin, FODMAP, autoimmune flare), but the absence of response after 60 days largely rules plant-driven pathology out.
What Improves, and How Fast
Track adherence + symptoms + a few biomarkers (waist, fasting glucose, lipids, hsCRP, sleep). Improvements cluster in the first 6 weeks; further gains require fat-ratio or protein adjustments, not stricter dogma.
Reading Your Bloodwork Without Panic
The Lean Mass Hyper-Responder triad (LDL-C ≥200, HDL ≥80, TG ≤70) appears most often in lean, fat-adapted patients. The CVD implications are an active research area; current evidence does not support extrapolating from population statin trials to this phenotype.
Plant Defenses, Honestly
Consider plant defenses as a dose-dependent variable, not a binary. Spinach and almonds are oxalate-heavy; cruciferous veg load goitrogens; nightshades carry alkaloids. For sensitive individuals, removal is diagnostic.
When Progress Stalls
Protocol: pull dairy → enforce fat ratio → measure for 2 weeks → only then consider 18–24h fasts. Hormonal stalls (perimenopause, hypothyroid) need lab data, not just dietary edits.
Conditions People Reverse
Stratify expectations by mechanism: antigen-driven (autoimmune, GI, skin) tends to respond fast; metabolic-driven (T2D, NAFLD) responds in weeks; structural conditions don't respond to diet.
Mechanisms for the Obsessed
The cleanest mechanistic story combines: (1) removal of dietary antigens reduces innate immune activation, (2) restored insulin sensitivity normalizes lipolysis and inflammation, (3) ketogenic substrate availability stabilizes neuronal energetics. None of these require carnivore specifically — but carnivore reliably triggers all three.
